- How a mustachioed Duchamp chess set is opening the dialogue on 3D printing and copyright laws (3ders.org)
September 9, 2015
Last year, US-based 3D fabrication artists Scott Kildall and Bryan Cera designed and created 3D printable chess pieces based on Marcel Duchamp’s personal, one-of-a-kind, hard-carved set. The files were uploaded to Thingiverse under the title “Readymake” to be shared, altered and printed for free, and the artists felt satisfied not only with the challenge of their 3D re-creation, but with the fact that they were following the footsteps of Duchamp’s ‘readymade’ art movement itself. Shortly thereafter, Kildall and Cera received a stern cease-and-desist from the Duchamp Estate citing copyright infringement, and were forced to scrub the internet of their work and disappear without a fight. This year, Kildall and Cera are back with a new 3D design project titled “Chess with Mustaches,” a playful, bold, and very well-thought out answer to the Duchamp Estate, which they hope will get people talking about the lines between intellectual property, artwork, and where 3D printing and Internet remixes fit into the debate.

- Project Runway’s 3D Printed Looks Available at Cubify (3dprintingindustry.com)
October 16, 2015
It’s been almost two years since Justin LeBlanc’s 3D printed wares graced the catwalk on Lifetime’s hit series, Project Runway. Since then, a countless number of designers have found ways to integrate the technology into their clothing, shoes, and accessories. But, given the inherit 3D modeling skills necessary to create such pieces and the time it takes to 3D print such elaborate pieces as Dita Von Teese’s 3D printed gown, the tech just wasn’t quite fit for a true Project Runway challenge. Tonight, the show proved, however, that they could make it work, but that they’d need 3D Systems’ new Fabricate line of 3D printed textiles to do so.

- “Sculptor de Voix” Gilles Azzaro 3D Prints Infant’s First Cries (3dprintingindustry.com)
July 31, 2015
The widespread adoption of 3D printing has contributed to create many new professional figures and artistic experiences that have never existed in the past. One of these is the “Sculptor de Voix”, or voice sculptor. This is Gilles Azzaro‘s profession and, while his experience has evolved over many years, he rose to fame by creating a 3D printed sculpture based on Barack Obama’s State of the Union address. In that speech, the US president spoke for the first time about 3D printing as one of the opportunities to seize to provide for America’s future. Now, Gilles has come up with another voice sculpture depicting a very different voice, although no less unique and important: a baby’s first cry.

It’s rare enough to see disabled characters represented in mainstream Hollywood films, and even rarer to see them in powerful, lead roles, wielding guns, leading armies, and generally kicking their able-bodied enemies’ butts. But that’s exactly what Imperator Furiosa does, and what inspired fellow-amputee Laura Vaughn to have a fully functional, prosthetic mech-arm 3D printed in her likeness.
- Illustrated Tales Made Physical with 3D Printing (3dprintingindustry.com)
July 28, 2015
More and more 3D printed consumer products are beginning to – literally – take a physical form. The formula that seems to be affirming itself is that of either using 3D printing to create new products (such as drones), or as a means to augment and personalize the user experience in entertainment products. For example, take the recently announced NecroVirus 3D printed board game. Founded by Vince Dorse and Prad Lal, a new project, called Blokko, intends to use 3D printing to expand the user experience in all storytelling, by offering a content and commerce platform where storytellers can publish and then collaborate with a community of 3D designers to create and sell merchandise relating directly to their IP.
